Homework

It doesn’t need to be said that more practice is always better. In the past, in addition to assigning homework, I’ve created assignments and projects specifically tailored for students’ needs. However, I realize that individuals may not always have additional time to do more work, or it may not always be necessary (such as when preparing for an exam).

Preparedness

Students should be prepared for tutoring lessons. Letting me know in advance (via email) what topic(s) or question(s) you would like to discuss or work on during the next session is often extremely helpful in keeping the session focused and productive. It also gives me time to prepare and gather any relevant materials.

Initial Assessments

Occasionally, initial assessments are helpful to determine the student’s needs. This will be discussed on a case-by-case basis.

General Information

Availability

I am able to schedule tutoring sessions 7 days a week between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. I occasionally schedule Skype sessions as early as 6:00 a.m., and some sessions have gone to 2/3:00 a.m.

Session Length

Sessions typically last between 60 and 180 minutes. Duration depends on the needs and preferences of the student. Sessions may vary with length over time; for example, sessions typically run for longer during exam periods.

In-Person Meeting Locations

Session location depends on the needs and preferences of the student. Common locations include downtown or midtown public libraries, University of Toronto St. George campus libraries, coffee shops, and students’ homes.

Online Sessions

When distance prohibits in-person sessions, it is possible (indeed sometimes preferable) to have sessions online via Skype (or WeChat). During online sessions, I frequently use applications such as Google Docs, TeamViewer, GeoGebra, and Daum Equation Editor, among others, to facilitate tutoring.

Payment

I accept cash, cheques, Interac e-Transfers, and PayPal payments. For in-person sessions, I prefer to be paid at the end of each session, one session at a time. For online sessions or work completed remotely, I prefer Interac e-Tranfers or PayPal payments. However, alternate arrangements may be worked out on an individual basis. There are no contracts.

Policies & Procedures

CANCELLATION AND NO-SHOW POLICY

There is no cancellation fee. However, if you do not show up after I have already arrived at the meeting location, reimbursement for any applicable travel expenses and for the missed session will be expected. If you cancel on short notice (e.g., less than 3 hours before the start of the session), do not show up, or cancel frequently, I may be less willing to schedule future sessions and you may be dropped from my schedule.

LATENESS

There is minimal tolerance for lateness. Lateness will cut into your session time. If I do not have other commitments following our session, I may be able to extend the session to make up the time that was lost.

If you do not notify me before the start of the session that you will be late, I can only guarantee waiting for 10 minutes for every 60 minutes of session time planned (e.g., 10 minutes for a 1 hour session, 20 minutes for a 2 hour session). If you are running late and want to ensure that I will wait for you, please send me an email or a text message as soon as possible.

ENDING EARLY / GOING OVER TIME

Ending a session early is always possible. I do not charge for the unused time. There are times when a session may go slightly beyond the originally scheduled time due to the completion of a problem or a topic. In such cases, we may continue to finish the topic if I do not have a session immediately after or we can defer to the next session. I do not charge for this extra time unless we explicitly agree to continue the session for an extra 15 or more minutes (again, provided I do not have clients immediately after).

SCHEDULING PRIORITY

Individuals who prefer to meet on a regular basis and those who do not have a history of cancelling sessions on short notice will be given scheduling priority.

INITIAL CONSULTATIONS

I generally do not provide free in-person consultations. However, I can talk on the phone for as long as necessary and address any questions you may have about my tutoring services.

INTERSESSION ASSISTANCE

If you have questions between tutoring sessions, you are welcome to email me. I will do my best to answer promptly. However, I cannot guarantee that I will be able to do so in the time you may require. If you suspect that you may need extra help through email or phone before our next session, please let me know in advance and I will do my best to assist you.

Regular rates apply for any tutoring, homework help, or homework editing provided electronically, including answering any questions sent through email if they takes more than 10 minutes to answer.

PHONE OR SKYPE SESSIONS

Regular rates apply for any tutoring provided over phone or Skype.

GROUP SESSIONS

Although I usually do one-on-one tutoring, I can work with groups of up to three students. The rates per person will be reduced.

PAYMENT

I accept cash, cheques (made out to “Tetyana Pekar”), Interac e-Transfers, and PayPal payments. For in-person sessions, I prefer to be paid at the end of each session, one session at a time. For work done remotely, I prefer Interac e-Tranfers or PayPal payments. However, alternate arrangements may be worked out on an individual basis. There are no contracts.

REFUND POLICY

If you feel that a tutoring session was not of benefit, you do not have to pay for it. Naturally, I will no longer be able to offer my services to you, but I may be able to help you find another editor or tutor whose services may be better suited for you.

ETHICS POLICY

I will always be honest with you about your progress and what I feel is best. I will not recommend additional tutoring sessions if I feel they will not benefit you, nor will I recommend them just to make a few extra dollars – my goal is always to help as efficiently and effectively as possible. I will also be honest if I feel I cannot help you for whatever reason, and I will do my best to find another tutor who may be more suitable or willing to help.
